I always recommend long leads to any of my clients who are experiencing struggles with teaching their dogs to recall.
A long lead allows you to progress from giving your dog very little freedom, to being able to give them enough freedom to learn great skills before being let off lead entirely.
But long leads have cons as well as pros…
- They get horribly tangled up.
- You need to hold the lead in such a way that your dog can’t land you flat on your face if they decide to zoom away. (Trust me, I’ve been there! But the right technique makes ALL the difference.)
Below are three quick videos to walk you through the ins and outs of using a long lead.

Handsome Murphy the Golden Retriever Demonstrating a Recall Taught Using a Long Lead!

But Murphy is now a recall rockstar, thanks to careful training and the assistance of a long lead.
